April Fool's!

I switched up the cereal inside the cereal boxes and created this gem:

I can't wait for the girls to make their breakfast tomorrow!

AFTERMATH: They LOVED this! But, Claire and Camille started getting upset with Audra for having Lucky Charms when there was no Lucky Charms box!

They spent the entire morning thinking of how to get me back. Camille brought me my slippers- stuffed with socks so I couldn't put my feet in;) Then, when I went to bed, I discovered books in my pillowcase! I love that they came up with such cute ideas all  on their own- no Pinterest involved!

Crazy Week

Pretty much every day I wake up and tell the girls, "Today is going to be a crazy day." I guess that's the joy of homeschooling- every day is something different, for better or for worse.

But, this week really was crazy! A picnic lunch in a tree, owls having babies, science fair, meeting with friends who are on spring break, a puppet show, and nature study. Pretty much, every day was "crazy" and not at all routine.

One of their games involved being kidnapped. I'm not sure what that was all about, but they were all smiles.

The Denver Puppet Theater is an actual place. It is a lovely older couple who basically run the theater out of their house downtown. I never saw the husband, so the wife ran the ticket counter, welcomed everybody, and was all the characters in the puppet show- sometimes being 3-4 characters at once! It's truly a business made out of their passion which was pretty cool.

The show was Brer Rabbit. I told Camille I hoped the show would help her get over her fear of Splash Mountain.

Carson Nature Center. They built a shelter. I can't wait until summer weather so we can spend more time outdoors!

Audra's Showcase

Every year at the Cloverleaf Middle School, the students put together a showcase, where they show what they have been working on. They did a science fair and displayed many of their projects. It was pretty cool.

Audra's project involved time- does time go faster when you are older? She did an experiment- she timed several people for 1, 3, and 5 minutes and had them say "stop" when they thought those time intervals had passed. She recorded her data, and wrote her conclusion. It was a very abstract idea, and when she told me I was like, "umm.....OK." But, her teacher is awesome and really helped Audra put her ideas together to form a great project.

This is a bridge her team built:

And, some of her art projects:

And, here's a bonus Camille art project just for fun. It's her mosaic.

PayDay

I just finished reading a great homeschooling book called "Brave Learner" by Julie Bogart. I'm completely overhauling our homeschool next year, but I'll talk more about that later. For the purpose of this post, I want to focus on one thing from her book: Paydays! She talks about those days when things go right- when the kids finally grasp a difficult concept, when you hear your daughter read a book for the first time, when things just "click."

I have been struggling the last few weeks. Not because of homeschooling, not because of the kids, not really anything in particular. Except, I think, the weather. I am so sick of winter! It has just been a long, cold winter- the worst one I remember for quite some time. And I'm tired of it.

But- today!

We had no plans outside of school, and the weather was nice and sunny. So, we decided to go on a picnic to a local park. This park doesn't have a playground, but it has things that are way better: Baby owls and nature play!

The girls ate a picnic in a tree and created an obstacle course. While they played, I walked around listening to Podcasts- one of my favorite things in the world.

They didn't want to invite friends- I have found that often they just want to play with each other. All I could think was how lucky we are to be able to do this on a school day. We are truly blessed.

It really was so peaceful and wonderful- a great PayDay!

Camille's Story

Camille is in a wonderful stage of writing stories- though she is adamant this isn't a story, but a book. You know, non-fiction. It makes me smile- she is such a sweet girl!

"What is the world? It is beautiful. Tell me more about the world. OK. We live in it. I love the world. It is so awesome. Tell me more about the world!"

Audra's Sacrament Talk

Audra gave a sacrament talk- and she was simply incredible. She was very poised and incredibly well spoken. Ben had a friend ask him if he wrote her talk for her- but we didn't write her talk. She did it all herself. I helped her put her thoughts in order, but they were all her thoughts- her stories, her testimony, her finding the quotes she liked and wanted to use.

Audra really is something special. Ben and I take zero credit- she really did just come out as an old soul- she is wise beyond her years, as evidenced by her sacrament talk:

Good morning.

I am part of the guinea pig generation because I am only 11 years old and I have to give a sacrament talk. When I gave primary talks I wasn’t so nervous because I knew that none of the children were listening. I hope that the attention span of this audience is the same.

For those of you who have a longer attention span, today I am going to be speaking about service. Most of my talk comes from a talk given by Gordon B. Hinckley in 2006, long before I was born, called, “Forget Yourself and Serve.”

In the talk, he said, “I believe in the obligation and blessings of service. What a wonderful thing it is for a man or woman to set aside all consideration of personal gain and reach out with strength and energy and purpose to help the unfortunate, to improve the community, to clean up the environment, and beautify our surroundings. How much greater would be the suffering of the homeless and the hungry in our own communities without the service of hundreds of volunteers who give of their time and substance to assist them.” End quote.

I would now like to share with you a story that happened to me a while ago. A few weeks before Christmas, I had the chance to go feed the homeless downtown. It was a cold day, and it was a long drive. But, we decided to brave the weather and feed the homeless anyway. We set up the food and hot chocolate. Sadly, not many homeless people came. It must have been too cold for some of them! Those that did come seemed happy to have warm food and drink. The reason that I shared this story is because it was a wonderful experience for me. Even though the homeless people will be hungry again, continue to be cold, and they probably have forgotten this meal, it help me. I realized that homeless people are nice and are just normal people. It also helped me to feel grateful for a warm house and food. It makes me want to do more service projects.

I would now like to tell you another quote from President Hinckley. He said, “May the real meaning of the gospel distill into our hearts that we may realize that our lives, given us by our Father, are to be used in the service of others. If we will give such service, our days will be filled with joy and gladness. More important, they will be consecrated to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and to the blessings of all whose lives we touch.” End of quote.

I now am going to talk about baptism of the dead. To begin, I would like to share about the first time that I went to the temple. Luckily, I got to go during school hours since I homeschool. There was nobody else doing baptisms for the dead. It was an extremely spiritual time. I could feel the Holy Ghost during the entire time. Every time I go back, I remember my first time and how wonderful it was. While I was researching about service, I found out that doing baptism for the dead is a service to our ancestors. I think that it is amazing that we are able to serve our ancestors even if they are dead. It is truly a blessing to be able to serve them.

Another way to serve is simply by doing our church calling. Here is another quote: “The church may call upon you to make a sacrifice. It may call upon you to give of the very best that you have to offer. There will be no cost in this, because you will discover that it will become an investment that will pay your dividends for as long as you live. The Church is the great reservoir of eternal truth. Embrace it an hold fast to it. Let the Church be your dear friend. Let it be your great companion. Serve wherever you are called to serve. Do what you are asked to do. Every position you hold will add to your capacity. I have served in many responsibilities in this great organization. Every service brought its own reward.” End quote.

In For the Strength of Youth, it says, “As you devote yourself to serving others, you will draw closer to Heavenly Father. Your heart will be filled with love. You will learn that service and sacrifice are ways to overcome selfishness.” End of quote. I would like to bear my testimony that I know that service is extremely important. I know that serving makes us happy, feels us with love for others, and brings us much closer to God. I close with one more quote from President Hinckley, “My plea is if we way joy in our hearts, if we want the spirit of the Lord in our lives, let us forget ourselves and reach out.” In the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Audra Cracks Me Up!

My mom sent Ben a card for his Birthday that something to the effect that he needed to remember that I had a "No Returns" policy. Then, she wrote a note that said, "Just kidding- we think Christina is pretty great!"

Audra didn't miss a beat in saying, "It's too bad she just THINKS you are pretty great."

Oh, man! That was a good one!

Birthday!

The Birthdays just keep coming, but we were very happy to celebrate this awesome guy!

The girls woke up bright and early and VERY loudly made Ben some Birthday waffles, his favorite.

He decided he wanted to go with some of his friends to an escape room. There is one at the local mall that uses a lot of technology that he wanted to try. It was a submarine (and it really did look like a submarine), and we were stuck at the bottom of the ocean and had to get out. We just made it!

The girls made Ben a cake- his favorite chocolate cake. Claire and Camille had a very specific vision of what they wanted the cake to look like. It was really cute.

We sure are blessed with Ben! He really is pretty awesome!

Da Vinchi Exhibit

We took a field trip to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science which has a special Da Vinchi exhibit.

It was pretty amazing to see all of the things he did! What an incredible man. But, like most incredibly men, he died poor and unrespected. He considered himself a failure. Fascinating, right?

They built a lot of his inventions from his notebooks that they had on display.

My favorite was the flying machine!

This is Claire's self portrait.

Then, it was free ice-cream day at DQ for the first day of spring, so we had to go enjoy. Ben decided to join us!

Come, Follow Me

Our church implemented a new home-church curriculum. This started in January. Every week after church, we pull out our scriptures and study the New Testament.

Some weeks are, well, better than others. There is quite a bit of weeping and gnashing of teeth and "I'm bored!" and "I don't want to do Come, Follow Me!"

But, because we believe in following our Church leaders, we are committed- even if it isn't great.

Well, yesterday for FHE I copied off a play about the wheat and the tares for Claire and  Camille to do. They hated the play, so I told them they could change it. They fought and fought some more.

Any they presented a play that had nothing to do with the wheat and the tares and completely missed the point.

But, it was great. They ended up having a great time. It did let us discuss the parable and set the story straight. And, once the fighting stopped, it was actually really sweet.

Creative Cooks!

It's Creative Cooks time! Whew! It is SO. MUCH. WORK.

But, they love it, and we get to eat a lot of great food from all of their cooking.

Claire worked with a friend and had the theme "Just Add Magic." This is a Netflix show the girls are obsessed with.

Camille is still a Cloverbud, so she just competes for fun. She did Animals.

Audra did New York. She had a partner, but her partner's Grandpa passed away and she had to drive to Minnesota for his funeral, so Audra had to go solo.

When Camille got judge, the judge had to turn to the audience and ask everyone to be quite because she couldn't hear Camille.

They both won for their divisions! Which means they get to go to state, and for the first time we will probably let them. They also both won "Most Popular", which means all the kids voted for them as their favorite.

They were very excited at their success. They really did work very, very hard and it showed. Here's some pictures of their wonderful foods:
