A Day In the Life

I recently read a series on another blog where homeschooling moms wrote out what their "typical" day looks like. It was pretty cool to peek inside the world of others, so I thought I would share ours as well.

Of course, a "typical" day is pretty hypothetical. That would consist of a day without errands, co-ops, swim lessons, misbehaved children, etc. We do get those days, but certainly not every day.

But, typically, here is what our days looks like:

6 AM: Kids wake up and amuse themselves while Ben and I continue to sleep. Usually they read or play with their stuffed animals or something similar.

Typically, Camille sleeps in her bed. But sometimes she decides the floor is more desirable.

7AM-ish: Ben and I begrudgingly get out of bed. I work out with Fitness Blender while the kids make themselves breakfast of cereal, toast, eggs, or oatmeal. After my workout, I make myself a smoothie for breakfast (of which the girls get one spoonful each), and Ben heads to work. If it is Tuesday or Thursday, he takes Audra to band on his way to work.

8:30- After my shower, I either go and pick Audra up from band, or, if she doesn't have band, we get started on our day. We start with devotional- song, prayer, scripture, Article of Faith, story from The Friend (church magazine), and closing song.

8:45- Kids do their own scripture study and write in their journals. We just started doing this a couple of months ago, but it has been going really well. We use THESE study guides from Discover the Scriptures.

9:15- Math. We use Math U See, and Claire also does 2 Plus 2 Is Not 5 to work on her basic math facts.

10- One kiddo works on Grammar and Writing one-on-one with me while the other plays typing and math games on the computer. Then they switch.

10:45- Kids do their own reading assignments.

(meanwhile, Camille is doing puzzles, doing her own pre-school workbooks, reading, playing with Magformers, or any other activity that keeps her busy)

11 AM-Spelling, while Camille plays computer games.

Then, if we have time, the girls do geography and/or handwriting.

11:30- Lunch/break from school. Kids make their own lunch- usually sandwiches.

12:15-Walk Camille to school

1-Reading on the couch

2:30-Konos activities- hands on activities for whatever unit we are studying. It might be science experiments or art projects, or any other number of things.

3-Done with school for the day, go pick up Camille from school. Play outside until Dad gets home from work and we eat dinner.

That's our "typical" day.

But, as mentioned before, most days are not typical. On Mondays we throw a "recess" into the morning routine- we go to a nearby park and play with friends for an hour. On Tuesdays, Audra and Claire have swim lessons. Wednesdays the girls have Cloverleaf, on Thursday they used to have drama (though they don't anymore- phew!), and Fridays are always a toss up because Ben has every other Friday off so often we will quickly get our school done and then go on some sort of family outing, or Ben will teach them coding, or who knows what. Oh, and we have co-ops and Valentine's Day parties, and Homeschool Skate, and really sunny days where we just  need to get outside and go on a hike, and....

And days like today. Where we spent our morning doing this:

And our afternoon doing this:

With school sandwiched in between.

It was a pretty crazy day (which is far more "typical" for us), but we are doing a unit on horses and they learned far more about horses going horseback riding than they ever could get from a textbook, and learning to make scones for 4H is certainly as important as learning how to diagram verbs. So, sometimes we have crazy days.

That's our life in a nutshell. It isn't perfect and it isn't always pretty, but it's pretty darn awesome and it's perfect enough for us.
