So, Covid is making summer...interesting.
We are staying positive and everything is fine. But, oh my goodness!!!
Only 50 people can be at the pool at any given time. So, once a week you need to go on-line to reserve spots.
At exactly 10 AM on Wednesdays, everybody mom Highlands Ranch logs on to their computer to get a spot for the next week. All reservations are taken in 10 minutes or less.
IT. IS. INSANE.
But, I won the Hunger Games and was able to get reservations for us to go swimming! The girls were required to have a wonderful time, despite the water being cold, because I really did need to fight to get those reservations! I even got our reservations for 6 so we could bring a couple of friends.
It's really hard work being a Covid mom.

Mosquito Bites
Check out these bites Audra got!
Can you see them? They are HUGE and they were all over her back! She literally got eaten alive! On the way home from DeKoevend we had to stop at Wal-Greens to get some anti-itch cream. I feel so bad for her! Mosquitoes usually aren't a problem here, but obviously they were today, though Audra was far and away the main victim.

Mt. Bierstadt
Ever sense I moved to Colorado, I have wanted to hike a 14er (a mountain peak over 14,000 feet- there are about 96 in the US, and 53 of them are in Colorado). Ben never had any interest, but- lucky for me- I now have Audra!
She is the best locally grown native I have! She is always up for doing an adventure with me, and she is honestly the BEST person to go on adventures with! She is up for pretty much anything, she maintains a super positive attitude, and she never whines or complains. She is seriously the perfect Adventure Partner, and I already have plans to travel Europe with her someday.
Anyway, a few weeks ago I said, "hey, Audra, do you want to hike a 14er with me?" I'm pretty sure she had no idea what I was talking about, but she said yes.
I have a friend who took her kids- including an 8 year old- on a 14er last year, so I asked her for tips and Audra and I made plans.
We originally wanted to go last Friday, but the weather turned bad- and weather is an important issue. You really need to be careful about lightning storms. That's one reason you also need to go early in the morning.
We left at 4:50 AM and got to the trailhead at 6:20.
And we started.
It started out lovely- nice and winding through a meadow. There was a stream to cross and bridges to go over marshes. It was lovely.
And then it got steep. Like really, really, really steep. The thin air also definitely took a toll- we had to take a lot of breaks. We kept telling each other, "We can do hard things!" Achieve Hard Things is the motto of our ward this year, so we used that a lot.
Once we got about 2/3 of the way up, we ran into ice and snow. It wasn't terrible, but it was very slippery and we really had to watch our steps- I did not want one of us breaking an ankle up there! That would be very bad!
Then we got to the peak. But, in order to get to the top, we had to go over a hundred yards of ice and rock! I couldn't believe it! It was tempting to turn back, except we had just given everything we had to get this far. We couldn't come this close to turn back!
So, upward we went! I didn't love this part. It was pretty scary.
Selfie mode turned our sign around- Mt. Bierstadt, 14,065 feet, June 22, 2020.
The view from the top is amazing.
And, there were several marmots wanting to eat our food:
On the way down, we kept looking up at the peak thinking, "oh my goodness- we climbed to the top of that!" It's an incredible feeling knowing we did that.
But, our legs definitely burned on the way down! My fingers swelled up like sausages- something about the altitude.
Once we got back into the car, I told Audra I needed to take a rest before I could drive us more. We were both so physically exhausted!
We drove down to Idaho Springs for lunch. I wanted to go to Beau Jo's, but there was a 45 minute wait, and after what we just did, we weren't going to wait that long for food! Instead we went to a sandwich shop which was really good.
We came home and both took long baths!
I don't know if I would call this "fun." I honestly don't know if I ever want to do something like this ever again- I'm not lying when I say it was so, so, so hard. But, the feeling of accomplishment? Unbelievable.
I love that I got to share it with Audra! That's the only way I would do it again- if Claire and/or Camille ever wanted to do it.
I'm so glad we did it- but now I want to die.

There were people who had ice clamps on their shoes, and admittedly that would have been really nice. But, what I wish we had most were gloves. I thought about bringing them but in the end didn't, and that was a mistake.
Onward and upward!
Finally, WE MADE IT!!!! This was honestly one of the most physically exhausting things I have ever done in my entire life.

Father's Day
It's pretty hard to win the Dad Lottery, but I definitely did!
The girls spoiled him by making him waffles this morning:
And, they made him the sweetest cards:
From Camille:
From Claire:
Dear Dad,
I love you so much and I am so excited to spend Father's Day with you. You are an amazing person and the best dad in the entire world!
Stop and make sure you read everything!
Turn that frown upside down because today is....Father's Day! Not it is time for your fortune to be told!
(fortune from a homemade paper fortune cookie): Today you will do the chicken dance!
From Audra:
I love you more than Doughnuts! Don't forget Baby Yoda (I had to include him- he's too cute!)
Dear Dad,
I love you so much! You are an amazing dad. To the world you are just one man, but to me you are the world. For all of the things you do for me, thank you. You have always been there for me. I love you. Have an awesome Father's Day!
My dad is the most patient, kind man on the planet. I have never once heard him raise his voice, scream out in anger, call anybody a mean name, or, really, say anything mean in his whole life. He is just the kindest of men in every way. When others would have lost their temper or lashed out in anger, he would often laugh and do everything he could to diffuse the situation and find a solution that could work for everyone. I have more love and respect for him than any other person on the planet.
This guy has seen more soccer, basketball, volleyball, and softball games than can be counted, attended more band concerts than anyone should be forced to endure, and helped us out of more binds than one would think humanly possible. And, somehow, he says he enjoyed it all.
My dad truly is my hero of heroes. Everyday I know I am blessed to call him Dad.
For Ben, we got him this "Dadalorian" shirt:

Roxborough Park
We had such a great time at Roxborough State Park today! It is such a beautiful park, and I always get so excited remembering this beautiful area is only 15 minutes from our home. What a blessing!
We stopped for a few minutes so the kids could draw in their nature journals. We started this several years ago- the kids drawing pictures of what we see. It's so fun to see their drawings over the years!
Camille is the one who forces us to stop and smell the roses. She notices every little thing- the butterflies, the flowers, the rocks. But, I love it- because she is right. It's about the journey, not just the destination.

Service Cupcakes!
I was so happy yesterday to get an e-mail from Kathy at The Shiloh House asking if I could make some cupcakes for a 16 year old foster child who was celebrating a Birthday today, but was in isolation because of Covid and was feeling really depressed.
What a great opportunity for service! Which is so great because we haven't been able to do a lot of service with Covid. Kathy said that this young lady loves Reese's PB Cups, so I looked up a recipe and found a great recipe with peanut butter frosting. I enlisted Claire since she is doing foods for 4H fair.
They turned out fabulous!!!!! So beautiful and so delicious! Of course we had to taste them. YUM!!!

Summer of Heroes
For our scripture reading, we are doing a "summer of heroes." Each week we are learning about a different Book of Mormon hero. Last week we learned about Amulek and about living in thanksgiving daily. So, we tried to remember to write some way that God blessed us or that we were blessed that day.
Here's some of my favorites:
"I am grateful for my family because they are so much fun to make movies with."-Claire
"Today the Lord has blessed me by giving me comfort when I needed it." -Claire
"God has blessed me today by helping me be brave and do something hard."-Claire
"He came in my heart because when I was doing school I felt good."-Camille
"Peaceful walk thru a park with pretty flowers and other plant life."-Ben
"God blessed me today by when I was scared the Lord helped me and stopped what was scaring me."-Claire
"The Holy Ghost comforted me when I was scared." -Camille
"He blessed me that I wouldn't die."-Camille
"Toilet paper."-Audra
