Wednesday was the biggest Public Affairs night of the year: Teacher Appreciation. This is our prom- it is a HUGE event. For the first time, I was in charge of making sure that everything went smoothly. Thankfully, I have an absolutely AMAZING committee- truly, I get to serve with the greatest talents in our stake. Also thankfully, the Lord blessed me to not get Ben's horrible awful illness until the day AFTER the event (and I do consider it a tremendous blessing!).
Here are some quick notes about the night:
-The superintendent and president of the school board attended. I don't know if any of you know this about me or not, but I'm not exactly on glowing terms with either of these women. I was a bit nervous, but I seriously prayed that I would not accidentally say any snide comments and that I would be polite, friendly, and professional. I was blessed, and I succeeded. Honest, here's proof:
That's the superintendent next to me- and I'm smiling! I was so well behaved.
-Somehow I ended up conducting the meeting. I don't know how this happened. The Public Affairs Director has never conducted before, but somehow I got elected, and my veto didn't count. I was really, really nervous, but it ended up being OK. Despite a couple of hiccups...
-I was introducing the principals, and I said "Mountain Valley High School" instead of "Mountain Vista." The audience shouted, "Vista!" so I said, "Oh, sorry- I have elementary kids so I don't know all the high school names," and apparently people really liked that save- I had several people comment that I was quick on my feet and that I gave a perfect response.
-Our main speaker, Principal Page, once won a car from Ellen (click
HERE), so I mentioned that in his introductory bio, turned to him, and said, "Sorry Principal Page, but we don't have a car for you tonight." He stood up and pretended to leave- it was pretty funny.
-I completely forgot the name of the second counselor in our stake presidency, so when I was introducing everybody on the stand, I went completely blank and he had to tell me. It was embarrassing, but thankfully he was a great sport about it.
-The stake president said it was really nice to have a woman conduct, since that rarely happens in church meetings. The Mormon Feminists would be so proud, but to me, when I hear "Mormon Feminism" I actually hear "More work for me." I'm not a fan.
-Nelson Garcia from 9News came to read the kids' tributes out loud. He is such a nice, witty, and and friendly man! And shorter than I expected. He did this last year, but last year I was behind the scenes, whereas this year I was sitting on the stand next to him and shaking his hand. He is a lovely man.
-Overall, the night could not have gone better!!! We had some minor fires that needed to be put out, but in the, outside of having way too much cake, the night was simply wonderful. The committee really came through- the decorations were fantastic, the dessert buffet was delicious (or so I heard since I can't eat it), the teachers felt loved and appreciated. In fact, one teacher told us that he has never felt such genuine gratitude. He said he has been to several district award nights, and ours felt much more sincere and heartfelt.
It was great. Everything was just great. And I'm glad it's over. Until next year.
